Self-awareness isn’t just some philosophical concept — it’s the foundation of actual progress. If you don’t understand how you think, feel, and react, you can’t effectively move your life in a meaningful direction. You’ll end up chasing goals that don’t fit, stuck in cycles you don’t understand and frustrated that nothing ever seems to change.
Confidence in your abilities to go after your goals can sometimes be difficult to find or keep.
It can sometimes take time to discover the confidence you have inside you. This can be especially true if you are trying something new.
I have a program that can help you to discover what is holding you back from achieving your goals as well as help you set an attainable goal related to where you are in your life and where you are trying to be.
This program also works with you to build up your confidence in being able to reach your goal.
You can find out more about this program at Confidology, a funny name but a serious program.

Getting real with yourself is the first step to doing anything worthwhile. Without self-awareness, your choices are based on habit, emotion or other people’s expectations. But when you do know yourself? You can change what’s not working, strengthen what is and build a life that actually reflects who you are.
What Self-Awareness Actually Means
Self-awareness means knowing how you operate. It’s understanding:
- How you typically react under stress
- What motivates you (and what doesn’t)
- Where your blind spots are
- What patterns you repeat — and why
It’s not about judgment or overanalyzing every feeling. It’s about clarity. It’s about seeing yourself fully and honestly, without the filters of ego, fear or wishful thinking.
1. Use a Journal to Track Yourself
Writing is a direct route to your inner world. You don’t need fancy prompts or a leather-bound notebook — just 15 quiet minutes at the end of the day.
Write down:
- What happened today?
- What did I feel?
- What did I do well?
- Where did I trip up?
- What could I do differently tomorrow?
Journaling brings subconscious patterns to the surface. Over time, you’ll start to see themes in how you act and react.
2. Review the Relationships That Shaped You
Every relationship — romantic, platonic, professional — leaves a mark. Look back and ask:
- Why did this relationship end?
- What patterns keep showing up?
- What kind of people am I drawn to and why?
- What kind of behaviour triggers me?
Now look at your current relationships. Are they healthy? Do you support each other? What version of yourself shows up in each connection?
Awareness in relationships helps you stop repeating toxic patterns and start building more honest, balanced ones.
3. Examine Your Biggest Regrets
Regret is a map. It shows you where you went against your values or instincts. Ask yourself:
- What decision do I still feel weird about?
- Why did I make that choice?
- What did I ignore at the time?
- What would I do differently now?
This isn’t about shame. It’s about decoding your past so you can make smarter moves going forward.
4. Notice What Keeps Dragging You Down
We all have one or two life struggles that keep looping. For some, it’s money. For others, it’s loneliness, anger, procrastination or never feeling satisfied — no matter what they accomplish.
These are not random. They’re telling you something.
Ask:
- What do I keep fighting against?
- What part of this might be self-created?
- What belief or behaviour am I clinging to that keeps this problem alive?
The goal isn’t to magically “fix” it overnight. It’s to get honest about what you’re up against — and what you can shift.
5. Meditate to Observe Your Mind
Meditation isn’t about emptying your mind — it’s about watching it. When you sit quietly and focus on your breath, your thoughts will pop up. That’s the point.
Notice:
- What topics your mind drifts to
- How often you judge yourself or others
- What emotions rise without invitation
The more you sit with your thoughts, the less power they have over you. You gain the ability to respond, not just react.
6. Imagine Watching Yourself
Step outside yourself for a moment. Pretend you’re a stranger watching your life like a documentary. What do you notice?
Ask:
- What habits define me?
- How do I spend most of my time?
- What story would someone tell about my priorities?
- What advice would I give to this person?
Seeing your life through another lens can break denial and give you insights you’d otherwise miss.
7. Understand Your Stress Responses
Stress doesn’t always show up as panic. It can look like eating junk, zoning out with TV, snapping at people or shutting down.
Ask:
- What do I do when I feel overwhelmed?
- How does stress change my behaviour?
- How have my stress responses hurt my relationships, health or work?
Once you know your patterns, you can start to change them. But first, you have to spot them.
8. Get Honest Feedback from Others
People close to you see things you don’t. Ask a few trusted friends:
- What’s one strength you think I overlook?
- What’s one habit or flaw I don’t seem to notice?
- How do you think I handle tough situations?
Ask them to be blunt. You don’t have to accept every opinion as truth — but if multiple people say the same thing, it’s worth looking at.
9. Define What Actually Matters to You
If you don’t know what you value, you’ll chase things that leave you empty. Get clear on:
- What do I actually want from life?
- What kind of work feels meaningful?
- What kind of relationships energize me?
- What kind of lifestyle feels aligned?
Picture your perfect day. Not a fantasy vacation — but a real, regular day. What does it look like? That’s your benchmark. That’s your “why.”
Why It All Matters
You can’t set real goals or change your life if you don’t know where you’re starting from. Self-awareness isn’t about navel-gazing — it’s about navigation.
It helps you:
- Make better decisions
- Understand your impact on others
- Avoid repeating mistakes
- Set goals that actually fit who you are
- Build stronger, more authentic relationships
You live with yourself 24/7. You might as well know who you are. That knowledge doesn’t solve every problem — but it gives you the power to respond instead of react, change instead of spiral, and grow instead of staying stuck.
